Rights group: Cluster bombs used in Georgia
GENEVA, Switzerland (AP) -- A human rights group says at least 25 civilians have been killed by cluster bombs dropped in the recent conflict between Russia and Georgia.
Human Rights Watch says both countries used the weapon in their August fight over Georgia's breakaway region of South Ossetia. Both sides have denied dropping cluster bombs on civilians.
Cluster bombs are fired by artillery or dropped from aircraft. Each bomb contains hundreds of small bomblets that are scattered over a wide area.
Arms specialist Stephen Goose said Tuesday at the United Nations that his group had found cluster bombs in 14 of the 19 villages it visited last month.
He says many fields in the area are still littered with unexploded bomblets.
